Volunteer Stories

I always want to do something for this community as I feel that it is our responsibility. Since I have more free time during weekends & holidays, I decide to spare some of my time to help the needed ones.

For the past few years, I have joined different charity organizations like: Retina HK, Buddhism Community and Welfare Dept. My job is mainly to give assistance to the elderly or sick people during outdoor activities, delivering food or other necessities to them or help out during charity sales functions.

I have been with McDonald House for a long period of time. I get along pretty well with all the staff and work quite happily there. I have had the same job ever since I am with them. There I get to meet with many young children who are seriously ill. Most of them can only play and run in the hospital. They are basically isolated from this world as they are not physically sound enough to be left alone outside.

Fortunately with the help of the donation fund, all their families can financially be supported. Other than medical facilities, the house also provides entertaining programs for them. The house has televisions, a computer center and a library. Some outdoor programs are also given with the permission of their doctors.

However, they still lack interaction with the children or friends of the same age, the chance to go to school like other normal kids. They have to be confined within the facility most of the time. We should really appreciate our lives as we can lead it normally and freely with our parents and friends.

Volunteers do not just work or help out without any return. On the other hand, you can acquire a lot more than you can expect being one of them. It is like getting another type of education unlike the conventional ones. I learn how to “give and accept?and care about the others. Most of all, I learn to precious more of my life and what I have right now. Reaching out and helping out can undoubtedly do good to yourself and the others.
